Fursuit Partial: Custom vs. Pre-Made
A partial fursuit - head, handpaws, feetpaws, and tail, worn over your own clothes - is one of the most common starting points for a first suit. It's lighter and cooler than a fullsuit, and usually a smaller budget. Whether you're commissioning one custom or considering a pre-made piece, the same quality checks apply.
What actually matters in a partial
Looks aside, a handful of construction details separate a partial that lasts for years from one that falls apart after a few conventions.
Vision and airflow
The eye mesh needs to be fine enough to hide your real eyes while still letting you see clearly, and the mouth or jaw area needs somewhere for hot air to escape. Poor ventilation is the number one reason people stop wearing a suit after a few outings.
Lining
A lined head - fabric between your face and the raw foam - is far more comfortable and easier to keep clean than an unlined one. It's worth asking specifically whether a head is lined before committing.
Foam and fur quality
Higher-density foam holds its sculpted shape for years instead of collapsing. Fur quality matters just as much: budget fur sheds and mats quickly, while good-quality faux fur keeps its texture wash after wash. Check our FAQ for more on how we source and match materials.
Custom commission vs. buying premade
Premade partials exist and can be a good option if you find one that already matches your character and don't want to wait - we keep a rotating stock of premade pieces ourselves, when available. The tradeoff is that you're limited to whatever's currently built - the colors, markings, and proportions are fixed.
A custom partial commission takes longer but means every color, marking, and proportion is built to match your actual character, not the closest available match. If your fursona has a specific design, custom is usually the better fit.
Caring for a partial once you have one
Wipe down the interior of the head after each wear with a mild disinfectant spray, and let it air-dry fully before storing - never use a clothes dryer on any part of a fursuit. Hand-wash paws and tails in cold water with a scent-free detergent, then brush the fur gently with a slicker brush once dry to prevent matting. Store the head on a stand rather than folded in a bag, so it keeps its shape.
